WTMA
and WPXI employees in the mid 1970s were subject to similar rules and
restrictions that part of many non-broadcasting jobs, as evidenced in
this 1975 memo, provided by former WTMA PD Lee Richards.
Statement of Station Policies
WTMA/WPXI Radio
Charleston, South Carolina - August 1975
A. HOURS OF WORK
The official
office hours or this station are 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday thru
Friday. Each of us (full time personnel) is required to perform
official duty eight hours per day and/or 40 hours per week. Air and
production personnel are required to work at least 40 hours per week
plus designed overtime. Any additional hours worked must be approved
by the General Manager. Except for the lunch period, all other
absences during your designated working time are subject to the
General Manager and your department head.
B. TARDINESS
The General
Manager and/or department heed have the authority to excuse only
occasional tardiness for good cause. You are on time
only if you are your woks station on time you are required to report
for duty. Unless excused for good cause, tardiness will not be
tolerated. This includes part-time personnel as well as full time
personnel. Chronic tardiness will occasion disciplinary action or
possible dismissal.
C. LUNCH PERIOD
For those
employees taking a lunch break, the official lunch period is one
hour. Any absence over one hour is subject to approval
by the General Manager and/or Department Heed. Lunch breaks will be
set for each individual by the General Manager and/or department
head and scheduled to aid in the smooth operation of each individual
station department.
D. VACATION
Vacations should
be requested in advance and are subject to approval of the General
Manager. Request tor vacation due to emergency will be considered.
Your vacation should be scheduled early enough to avoid problems of
conflicting with other employee vacation schedules. One week
vacation is earned after one year employment. Two weeks vacation is
earned after two years employment.
E. CONDUCT ON THE
JOB
1. Transaction of
personal business:
Personal
telephone calls shall be permitted on a limited basis and when
they occur should be for a limited duration. Under no
circumstances is visiting by telephone permitted.
2. No personal
business of any kind is to be permitted on station property.
3. Office Conduct:
Employees are
expected to maintain business-like decorum at all tines.
Interaction between employees must be kept on a business-like
basis.
4. Use of station
property:
Each employee
has a positive duty to protect and conserve station property
including that entrusted or issued to him or her.
F. OUTSIDE
EMPLOYMENT
Any outside
employment held by any employee shall not serve to interfere or be
in conflict with FCC regulations or the duties assigned to such
employee by the management of WTMA/WPXI Radio. The General Manager
must be notified of outside work.
G. FINANCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY
The manner in
which an employee discharges his or her financial responsibilities
reflects on the Company and the Station as the employer. The Company
and Station cannot condone laxness on the part of an employee in
discharging the employee's financial obligations.
H. CORRESPONDENCE
All outgoing
correspondence must be reviewed by the General Manager and is
subject to his approval.
I. REASONS FOR
DISCHARGE OR OTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTION
1.
Insubordination:
The failure by an employee to comply with any Company policy, rules
or procedure set forth by Management verbal or written end/or
disrespect for Management shall be grounds for discharge.
2. The possession, use or discharge of firearms on company premises
shall be grounds for dismissal.
3. The possession, use, sale or purchase of narcotic drugs - (drugs
that are not prescribed by a doctor) shall be grounds for dismissal.
4. Falsifying company records or failure to comply with company
rules and FCC rules in keeping transmitter logs or station program
logs shall be cause for immediate discharge.
5. Fighting on Company premises shall he grounds for discharge.
6. Wasting time, loitering, leaving place of work during working
hours without permission shall result in disciplinary action.
7. Immoral conduct, indecency, and/or loud abusive language shall be
grounds for dismissal.
J. VISITORS
Any and all
persons not employed by this Company or unauthorized persons shall
not be permitted in any area beyond the front office area without
the permission of Management. Visitors must remain in the front
office until they have permission to proceed further. This included
ex-employees. All visitors must use the front entrance.
K. BUILDING
SECURITY
The back and side
doors must be kept closed and locked at all times when not being
used by employees.
L. RECORD PROMOTERS
All record
promoters will be permitted to visit the station during normal
business hours 8:30am - 5pm - Mon-Fri). They are not permitted to
visit the station control rooms.
M. DISCRIMINATION
No employee, on
the grounds of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, will
be subject to discrimination under any program or activity conducted
by the Management of WTMA/WPXI or any or its personnel.
